The Crown Estate has joined forces with the AJ once again to launch a new architectural competition to create the retail park of the future.
The Crown Estate/ AJ Future Retail Destinations Competition is open to all UK-based architects and asks entrants to design an innovative and successful out-of-town shopping destination for the year 2030 and beyond.
The winning designs will be for a retail park in a prominent out-of-town location served by major roads and offer a mix of retail, leisure and food and beverage outlets.
Submissions should propose a retail destination of at least 200,000 sq ft and a minimum of 10 units. They should also consider the important role of high-quality public realm, the increasing impact of tech in retail, its connectivity, the environmental and social sustainability of the scheme and the experience created for shoppers.
The free-to-enter contest is in two parts, the first conceptual and the second practical. Designs will be sought from both up-and-coming and experienced UK-based architects. Ten – twelve shortlisted entrants will present their concept designs to a panel of judges on 8 May 2018. The judges will select six winners to take part in the second, practical stage: a day-long design charrette to be held on 21 June 2018.
